In a Rut?
Want out?
Here's a place to start.
Let's check in with your body first.
Play along with me here for a minute.
All you gotta do is just ask.
Body, What am I feeling lately?
Then stop for a second and really listen.
Maybe it says: I feel…busy, rushed, angry, frustrated, lonely, crazy.
For Me.
A few weeks ago I started to feel antsy.
I felt yucky, blech. (Is that a feeling? Not sure, but I'm gonna go with it.)
Then ask yourself, Why.
Why, do I think I might be feeling this way?
(Hint, we feel a certain way because of what's going on in our heads)
And here’s what was going on in mine.
I need more balance.
I hate not working out regularly.
I'm so over this.
I gotta get out.
(No wonder I was feeling antsy and belch with all that going on in my head.)
I decided it was time for a change.
Because I was sick of the way I felt.
I knew I wanted to feel energized instead.
But how do you go from yucky (insert crappy feeling here) to energized (insert better feeling here)?
Great question.
Try this.
Start with someone you know that you think might feel the way you want to feel.
For me I'll use my kickboxing trainer Sam. I know he definitely feels energized a lot.
Then make a guess as to what thoughts they might have.
Like this.
I image Sam probably thinks things like this in the morning when he wakes up.
I’m ready to work my body + move my muscles!
I'm gonna get a jump start on my day!
It's time to get up and go! Because afterwords I’m gonna feel so good.
And I decided to try on his mindset.
Im ready to get up and go! (ok, not quite there yet)
Because afterwords I’m gonna feel so good. (Now this sounds good. I want this.)
Plus I know it's true. When I workout I tend to feel energized after.
Now that I have a believable mindset/thought shift.
It's time for a little action.
In order for me to get out of my antsy rut besides changing my mindset I knew I would have a better chance for success if I created some accountability and support. AND it sounded like a lot more fun! And fun is a good motivator for me.
Here's what I did.
I sent Sam a text.
I made the time in my day to workout.
I dusted off my boxing gloves.
And I hit the gym.
"You still got it."He said. (It had been awhile :))
"Yeah. I missed this like crazy." (And boy did I)
Now don't get me wrong...
I got all nasty sweaty.
I felt nauseous.
And I was soar for days.
But I was smiling.
Because I felt good.
I was out of my rut.
And afterwords, you guessed it, I was energized.
Was it easy?
Heck No!
Did it take some time + effort + rearranging?
For sure.
Was it worth it?
Rut? What Rut. ;)
And on my way home from my last workout I realized how quickly you can choose to turn a rut around just by checking in with yourself to see what feels off. Then decide what you want to feel instead. Next try one small actionable step towards your goal. For me, it was texting Sam : making a date to start.
How about you?
Any area in your life where you feel like you're stuck in a rut?
Wanna change it? Why not give this a shot.
Then let me know how it went.
What do you have to loose?
Better yet,
What do you have to gain…yeah, that's where it's at.
Big Smiles to Rut-kickin',
